Finally

It has been a rough semester, but it’s time for my FINAL BLOG! When I started this course I would have called myself more of a movie person. I despised all fiction books and a lot of non-fiction books. All I liked reading was science textbooks. I feel I was very independent. I used to read a particular text book all the time even when it was not assigned.

Fight Club

The most recent book that I have started is called fight club. My reason for reading this book is the fact that almost everybody I know has either seen the movie or read this book. Also, last Monday I was browsing the internet and somehow I came across a top 5 movie list and fight club was number one. If anyone is willing to go out on a limb and say that this story is number one material, I’m sold. I started this book on Monday and so far I have read about 80 pages. In those 80 pages we the main character of the story.

In J. D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, a blunt and vulgar diction is conveyed. This is illustrated throughout the excerpt on the handout.

style mapping

The three works that I am choosing to compare are, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian, and John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, she uses Elevated and sophisticated style of diction. For example, when she writes “Accompanied the commencement of an enterprise which you have regarded with such evil forebodings” it shows her high diction. On the other hand, in the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, a more blunt and vulgar form of diction is used. For example, when Steinbeck writes “With us it ain't like that” you can see the slang in his writing. Finally, in Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian, we see a more scholarly and traditional form of diction. You can see this when he writes “Where he rode no soul save he”

Quarterly

This quarter has been rough for me. With band, AP physics, and other classes, I have fallen behind in my school work. The books I have read this quarter have consisted of Blood Meridian, No Country for Old Men, Of Mice and Men, and The Magicians Nephew. I usually start reading at around 11:30 and go till about 12:00.  This next quarter I am looking forward to reading and blogging more. If I had to choose a goal, it would be to read at least one series, and receive an A in this class for the third quarter.
