First Post
It is 11:14 PM and I am writing my first post. The book I have been reading this week is Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. The reason I am reading this book is because they mentioned it on the TV show lost. I have been disappointed as I have read because I already know the ending. So far in the novel, we have met the two main characters. One is named George and the other is named Lennie. The book starts with an image of a riverbed. George and Lennie come down to the river bed after a bus drops them off. After George complains about were the bus driver drops them off, we find out that Lennie is not write in the head. We also find out that Lennie has had problem with his previous jobs. After some dialog George and Lennie sit down and eat dinner. As they go to sleep George tells Lennie what their about the land that they are going to buy after they get the money from their job. The next morning, George and Lennie go to the ranch they are to work at. They first meet a one handed “swamper” named Candy. Later the boss comes in to see if the new guys are here yet. After he leaves his son Curley comes in looking for his wife, but ends up just trying to pick a fight with Lennie. After Curley left, his wife comes in looking for him and flirts with George and Lennie instead. After she leaves we meet slim, the most respected worker at the ranch. The next day after work George and slim come in and slim says he will give Lennie a puppy. Later Candy and Carlson come in to the bunk room and Carlson starts to get on Candy about killing his old smelly dog. After a while Candy gives in and Carlson takes out his gun and leads the dog out to kill it. Later Curley storms in looking for his wife again and see’s that slim is missing. He assumes that he is with his wife and goes to the barn to look for him. After Curley leaves George tells Lennie about the land their going to buy. Candy over hears their conversation and says that he has a lot of money and he wants in. While they are talking slim comes in with Curley and we find out the Slim was not with Curley’s wife. After this embarrassment Curley looks for someone to take his anger out on. He does not want to fight slim because he knows he will lose so he goes after Lennie. After Curley punches Lennie in the face a few times, Lennie grabs his hand and crushes it. So far in the book, the only problems I have had were with some of the words. Some of them are old fashion slang that I do not understand.
